    Quantum state transfer in imperfect artificial spin networks

    High-fidelity quantum computation and quantum state transfer are possible in short spin chains. We exploit a system based on a dispersive qubit-boson interaction to mimic XY coupling. In this model, the usually assumed nearest-neighbors coupling is no more valid: all the qubits are mutually coupled. We analyze the performances of our model for quantum state transfer showing how pre-engineered coupling rates allow for nearly optimal state transfer. We address a setup of superconducting qubits coupled to a microstrip cavity in which our analysis may be applied.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, RevTeX

    Deep ROSAT-HRI observation of the elliptical galaxy NGC 1399

    We present the preliminary results of a deep (167 ks) ROSAT HRI observation of the cD galaxy NGC1399 in the Fornax cluster. We find, in agreement with previous observations, an extended (41 Kpc adopting a distance of 19 Mpc) gaseous halo with a luminosity of L_X=(4.41\pm 0.04)x10^{41} erg/s. The 5 arcsec resolution of the data allows us to detect a very complex and asymmetric structure of the halo with respect to the optical galaxy. Moreover the analysis of the radial structure reveals the presence of a multi-component profile not consistent with a simple King model over the whole 40 Kpc. We do not detect the presence of a central source and pose an upper limit to the luminosity of a possible active nucleus. Due to the length of the observation, comparable to that of a deep survey, we detect a large number of sources within the HRI FOV, in slight excess with respect to the estimates based on previous surveys.     Heat transfer and pressure measurements and comparison with prediction for the SSME two-stage turbine

    Time averaged Stanton number and surface pressure distributions are reported for the first stage vane row, the first stage blade row, and the second stage vane row of the Rocketdyne Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) two-stage fuel-side turbine. Unsteady pressure envelope measurements for the first blade are also reported. These measurements were made at 10 percent, 50 percent, and 90 percent span on both the pressure and suction surfaces of the first stage components. Additional Stanton number measurements were made on the first stage blade platform, blade tip, and shroud, and at 50 percent span on the second vane. A shock tube was used as a short duration source of heated and pressurized air to which the turbine was subjected. Platinum thin film heat flux gages were used to obtain the heat flux measurements, while miniature silicon diaphragm flush-mounted pressure transducers were used to obtain the pressure measurements. The first stage vane Stanton number distributions are compared with predictions obtained using a version of STAN5 and quasi-3D Navier-Stokes solution. This same quasi-3D N-S code was also used to obtain predictions for the first blade and the second vane

    Intra-accumbens baclofen, but not muscimol, increases second order instrumental responding for food reward in rats

    Stimulation of either GABA(A) or GABA(B) receptors within the nucleus accumbens shell strongly enhances food intake in rats. However the effects of subtype-selective stimulation of GABA receptors on instrumental responses for food reward are less well characterized. Here we contrast the effects of the GABA(A) receptor agonist muscimol and GABA(B) receptor agonist baclofen on instrumental responding for food using a second order reinforcement schedule. Bilateral intra-accumbens administration of baclofen (220-440 pmol) stimulated responding but a higher dose (660 pmol) induced stereotyped oral behaviour that interfered with responding. Baclofen (220-660 pmol) also stimulated intake of freely available chow. Muscimol (220-660 pmol) was without effect on responding for food on this schedule but did stimulate intake of freely available chow. Unilateral administration of either baclofen or muscimol (220 pmol) induced similar patterns of c-fos immunoreactivity in several hypothalamic sites but differed in its induction in the central nucleus of the amygdala. We conclude that stimulation of GABA(A) or GABA(B) receptors in the nucleus accumbens shell of rats produces clearly distinguishable effects on operant responding for food

    Two-dimensional imaging of gauge fields in optical lattices

    We propose a scheme to generate an arbitrary Abelian vector potential for atoms trapped in a two-dimensional optical lattice. By making the optical lattice potential dependent on the atomic state, we transform the problem into that of a two-dimensional imaging. It is shown that an arbitrarily fine pattern of the gauge field in the lattice can be realized without need of diffraction-limited imaging.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
